The Smartphone Duel of The Year: iPhone 8 vs. Galaxy S8

Woman Smartphone

The smartphone wars take on an exciting tangent as Apple promises the launch of iPhone 8 to take on Samsung’ Galaxy S8. The Galaxy S8 was released this spring and has so far won the favour of many with its new design. Some of the notable features of the Galaxy S8 include the conspicuous absence of the home button and the expanded screen size to 5.8 inches and 6.2 inches on Galaxy S8 Plus.

There are no official details on the iPhone 8. Nevertheless, we endeavour to provide a glimpse of how the supremacy wars may turn out based on the news, early predictions, and rumours about iPhone 8.

Design

The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus both have curved screens. The bezel size has been reduced below and above the display. Removal of the physical home button stands out as one of the major design changes in the S8. Since the fingerprint sensor was on the S8, it has been moved to the back of the phone next to the rear camera. However, the Galaxy S8 still has its headphone jack.

It is rumored that the iPhone 8 will be the first Apple device to feature curved OLED screens. Presently, all iPhones have the LCD display. The home button is not expected in iPhone 8 since it was eliminated in the iPhone 7. Early news reports predict that the iPhone 8 will have a 5.8-inch screen. With the ditching of the earphone jack in iPhone 7, it is not expected in iPhone 8 either.

Camera

Early predictions had shown that the Galaxy S8 would come with dual lens cameras but that remains a work in progress. Instead, it has a dual pixel technology that provides an improved focus of its 12-megapixel camera. With the help of Samsung’s Bixby vision, the company promises that the camera can be able to give contextual information of what is being viewed. The front camera is an 8 megapixel, very selfie-friendly.

The unmet hopes of a dual lens on the Galaxy S8 have been banked on iPhone 8. There is a high chance that it meets this expectation because iPhone 7 Plus already had such a camera. However, iPhone 7 Plus had a horizontal shooter camera but leaks have shown the iPhone 8 camera as having a vertically aligned camera.

Another expected addition to the iPhone 8 is a 3D camera that allows augmented reality applications. The front facing camera is said to have a 3D-scanning feature. The feature will be used as a biometric scanner when accessing software or verifying purchases on Apple Bay.

Fingerprint Sensor

Samsung Galaxy S8 introduced the fingerprint sensor as a replacement for the home button. Unfortunately, it placed it at the back of the phone next to the camera. However, one can lock the Galaxy S8 using facial recognition or iris scanner.

The iPhone 8 is said to uphold the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It is rumored that Apple is working on a technology that would integrate the sensor on the screen, if this happens, users will touch anywhere on the screen to activate it.

The iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 are to be judged on other features such as their AI assistants, Siri for iPhone 8 and Bixby for the Galaxy S8. So far, the changes in the Samsung Galaxy S8 are considerably impressive. Apple has to do more in terms of iPhone 8’s performance, battery life and display if it is to take over the market.
