Communication technology has improved beyond all recognition over the last couple of decades. Innovators have successfully made the world a smaller place by linking people together. It is now possible to communicate with almost anyone on the planet in a matter of seconds. So, we wanted to take a look at some of the technologies that allow that to happen. We’re going to discuss some of the innovations that have revolutionized the world for civilians and business owners. Without these advancements, the world would be a much different place today.
WiFi Internet Connections
During the 1990s, most people started to use the internet in their homes. That often meant plugging their computers into a phone line. However, accessing the online world would stop people from being able to call the telephone. They would encounter an engaged tone whenever the user was sitting at their computer. Thankfully, WiFi brought an end to that situation. By the early 2000s, most people could access the internet all day long while still answering calls. That meant business owners didn’t have to pay as much line rental. It also acted as a catalyst encouraging more companies to operate online.
RF and Satellite Communication
Up until recently, people working in the middle of nowhere would struggle to maintain an internet connection. However, that changes thanks to radio frequency devices that use a horn antenna. The new technology allows those without a decent connection to access the same communication channels. It’s perfect for people working in the oil industry who often have to travel to out of the way places. Likewise, it’s ideal for military personnel on tour in the Middle East. Without RF technology, those in remote locations will never manage to contact the outside world.
Almost everyone who lives in Western countries now has a smartphone in their pocket. The technology enables us to maintain a reliable internet connection on the move. It even allows us to send emails, engage in live chat and more. The phones of today are nothing like they were in the 1980s. Indeed, recent products resemble handheld computers more than traditional calling devices. However, the industry is progressing at an alarming rate. Apple plans to release the new iPhone 7 in a few months, and that should bring even more advancements. FaceTime, Skype and other video messaging applications are readily available. So, people can even communicate face to face using modern devices.
Nobody knows how communication technology will improve in the future. Only one thing is for certain – the world is getting smaller. Experts predict that concepts used in Google’s recent Glass innovations will become hot property. That could mean most people will wear Internet-enabled headsets within the next few years.
Whatever you might think about the state of communication technology today, you have to admit that we’re living in exciting times. Pretty soon, every person on the planet will have the same opportunities as those living in the West. Better communication could help to push countries out of poverty and spark a technological revolution in Africa. We’re just glad we’re around to see it.
